The Summer Solstice brings us endless Summer days and memories of Annette Funicello. Her dual roles as a Mouseketeer and beach movie icon kept her on the front pages of all the movie magazines with her teen idol pal, Frankie Avalon. Rivaling Gidget as the most popular screen beach bunny, she also had a fabulous singing career. Walt Disney was her mentor.
On a personal note, Annette was a member of my Catholic parish in Encino, CA. I sat behind her each Sunday at church. Yes, she was devoutly religious her entire life. Young boys had a crush on her; young girls found a role model.
